
Geethavani Awards 2009 organized by the Jaffna Hindu College OBA, Sydney on 19 Sept., 2009 at Bankstown Auditorium in Sydney, Australia attracted over 900 Tamil music lovers from the multi community in Sydney including old boys of Jaffna Hindu College. The spectacular show - an evening of exciting music competition, had an array of pop, cine songs and wonderful fusion music.
The colourful evening entertainment, the most awaited event of the music lovers in Sydney gave the opportunity for many talented singers to exhibit their talent to larger audience. The talented vocalist, some staging their performance for the first time mesmerized the audience with their voice.
The prestigious ‘Geethavani Awards’ for the outstanding performance was judged under four categories; category 1: solo 12 – 18 age group, category2: solo 19 – 35 age group, category3: solo over 35 age group and duet.
Ms Kanmany Jegendran was judged as the best singer under category1, Ms Divya Sooraj took away the award for category2, Sethumadhavan bagged the award for category3, and Pravesh Purusothaman, Sudhagar Sivapalan duo were voted as the best performers of the duet competition. The Duet Category is an inaugural category in this year's competition, which allows duets to be performed by anyone aged 12 and over.
The selection of the best performers of the evening was left to the discretion of the audience, the winners were chosen by the number of votes they received from the audience.
The Geethavani Awards 2009 was originally planned for 7 June, 2009 but considering the situation in home land, the organizing committee decided to halt the event. Subsequently they rescheduled the event on 19th Sept 2009.Net proceeds from the Geethavani Awards 2009 will go towards helping children who have been affected by the recent war in the north and east of Sri Lanka. The proceeds will be channelled via Jaffna Hindu College.
The philosophy of the ‘Geethavani Awards’ is to encourage the growing number of talented Tamil singers in Australia. Following the great success of the last 3 years of the Geethavani Awards, this time the Jaffna Hindu College Old Boys' Association (JHC OBA), Sydney announced new category, the duet and a wide variety of original performances to the Geethavani Awards 2009.
The JHC OBA Sydney Singing Competition was conducted by the internationally recognised musician 'Maestro' 'Wadyavisharadh' Sarangan Sri Ranganathan, who along with his accompaniment of renowned artists, added colours to the show with his new, original and exciting albums.
The event started at 6.30pm and came to an end by 11 pm with the award ceremony. Mr Ponnampalam, former principal of Jaffna Hindu College and Shiva Pasupathy former Attorney General of Sri Lanka were among the personalities who gave away the award for the winners.
