Geethavani 2012, another memorable event of Sydney OBA

[Video inside] Geethavani Awards 2012, the Sydney OBA's prestigious annual singing competition for 2012, took place on Saturday, the 1st of September 2012, at the Riverside Theatre, Parramatta. This is their 7th successful musical awards function.

The Geethavani Awards of Sydney OBA is a musical extravaganza comprising exciting singing competition, dances, and light music. The JHCOBA Sydney is proud to host Geethavani Awards annually as it was the first singing competition introduced in Sydney, to promote local artist and bring out new talents. The band is the single most important aspect in any musical programme, and music for the Geethavani evening was provided by the "Eastern Empire," a talented musical team directed by Sathis Varshan from India. Sathis Varshan's debut in the Tamil Cine industry  "Vellai Kakitham" is expected to be screened soon.

Jaffna Hindu old boys of Sydney never fail in following traditions; this year too, the musical evening started at 6.30 PM with Thamil Mozhi Vazhthu, National anthem, College anthem, and lighting of the traditional oil lamp (MangalaVilakku) as a custom in Tamil culture. Mr.S.Ponnampalam, former Principal of Jaffna Hindu College, Duputy Principal Mr.Arulanantham, and President of Sydney OBA Mr.V.Gunaranjithan were requested to light the oil lamp. Then the President of Sydney OBA welcomed the guests and thanked them for their generous support, with which we were able to conduct many activities in Sydney and charity works in our home land, he said. He also thanked the committee members and friends whose commitment and dedication made Geethavani Awards possible for the seventh year. He also didn't forget to mention the valuable contribution of the sponsors. TSS World-wide Money is the major sponsor of Geethavani.

As usual, the singing competition was conducted under four categories. Category 1 was solo for 12 – 18 age group, and the theme was Uravum Unarvum. Category 2 was solo for 19 – 35 age group, and the theme was Thulluvathe Ilamai. Category 3 was solo for the over 35-age group, and the theme was Mellisai Ghanankal. And the fourth category was the duet with the theme Neeya Naana. The final contestants, to perform on the Geethavani stage, were selected from a large number of applications.

Under category 1, Nayeni Kugasri, Adithya Vydhyanathan Sriram, Abisaini Padmasiri, and Saampavi Kejamuhan were the final contestants. Gokul Menon, Shalini Harikes, Neethu Suresh Babu, and Senthurapriyan Sathiyanathan were selected for final performance under category 2. Under category 3, Leena Rajasekhar, Sathiyapriya Gnanakumaran, and Nadarajah Gowripalan were the finalists. And the duet finalists were Shyam Gomatam and Dheekshitha Venkadeshan, Kumaran Thanigasalam and Soumya Ravikumar, and Sethumadhavan Pathiyil and Reka Iyar. It was a closely contested competition where all the finalists in every category were equally good. The winners for each category were chosen by the votes of the audience. The Winners were:

Category 1 (12 – 18 age group, Theme - Uravum Unarvum):  Ms.Abisaini Padmasiri
Category 2 (19 – 35 age group, Theme - Thulluvathe Ilamai):  Ms.Neethu Suresh Babu
Category 3 (over 35-age group, Theme - Mellisai Ghanankal):  Ms.Sathiyapriya Gnanakumaran
Category 4 (Duet, Theme Neeya Naana):  Sethumadhavan Pathiyil and Reka Iyer

The award for the category 1 winner was sponsored by Sri Accounting, and for category 2 was sponsored by TSS Worldwide Money Transfer. Vim Tech sponsored for category 3 winner, and BJ Accounting for the winners of duet category.

Geethavani 2012 is yet another successful event for Sydney OBA where around 700 audience enjoyed the evening filled with music. The venue was ideal for a musical programme like Geethavani, and the Eastern Empire gave an excellent treat to the music lovers, they had a good team of musicians. Miruthangam was by Janakan Suthanthuraraj, which was wonderful, and Sathis Varshan was at the keyboard and Flute. Couple of guests also sang; they were excellent.

Mr.Thiru Thiagarajah was selected as the best entertainer of the evening.

Geethavani 2012 Souvenir also was released at the event. During the interval dinner was served, and there was a nice dance programme too.

Sivapragasam Shanmugathaas, Secretary of Sydney OBA, delivered the Vote of Thanks, and Mr.Ganesan Meganathan was the Master of Ceremony. The event concluded at 11.00 PM.
