The annual musical show 'Ghana Mazhai' of Melbourne OBA (Vic Inc.) this year offered a new experience to its spectators. True to its name, “Ghana Mazhai” showered the audience with an array of lovely songs, and the dances in between added more flavour to the whole event.
Extract from the welcome speech of Mr.Athiththan Thangarajah, the President of Melbourne OBA
I together with all the committee members of Jaffna Hindu College Old Boys Association of Australia (Victoria) would like to extend a warm welcome to our Ghana Mazhai 2012.Jaffna Hindu College being a very prestigious school in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka has produced many stalwarts in its 125 years long history. Our school has set the benchmark in producing students who excelled not only in academic performances but also in sports and other competitions. Our school was established to preserve our values, culture, and traditions when our community was facing numerous challenges during the British rule. The Jaffna Hindu College has lived up to its founder’s desire in the past and will follow suit in the current environment too as the flag bearer of our culture and traditions. We, the old boys of Jaffna Hindu College living all over the world, have a huge responsibility to assist our alma mater in achieving its objective to maintain high standards and to pass our identity to the next generation. The fund raising event being held tonight and in the past years has given us the opportunity to make valuable contributions to our school.JHC OBA Victoria is very proud of their part played in bringing the Science Lab back in to a functional state after two decades. This has given the opportunity for the students to experiment their theoretical knowledge in to practice. In addition to that, JHC OBA Victoria has encouraged the students who were selected to represent Sri Lanka in international competitions by jointly sponsoring the cost of participation.
The Jaffna Hindu College OBA Victoria has launched its web during our members’ night in June this year to enhance the communication between OBA and all the old boys. Our web provides the details of our OBA events and projects undertaken by OBA in assisting our school.
These achievements by JHC OBA Victoria would not have been possible without the commitment and dedication of all the committee members who gave their valuable time. I take this opportunity to thank all committee members and their families for their effort and commitment in preparation to stage our Ghana Mazhai 2012 this evening.
We have been holding this fund raising event annually with the main event being the live music programme. In addition to live music programme, OBA Victoria is introducing a Valakkadu Mantram this year. I am confident that you will enjoy these programmes and the delicious dinner.
On behalf of the committee members, I welcome you once again and hope you will enjoy the evening along with the other old boys of Jaffna Hindu College, their families and friends. The first entertainment in the agenda was a Valakkaadu Mantram, which was more of a social awareness than just an entertainment. The debate titled "Kuttravali Koondil Pulampeyar Thamizharkal" was about the contribution by diaspora for the development of our homeland. It was judged by Paadum Meen Srikantharajah. Following that the Chief Guest Shiva Pasupati delivered his address.
From there onwards the ghana mazhai started showering. The immersive live music was provided by “Puthiya Poopalam Isai Kulu”, headed by Niroshan Sathiyamoorthy. Their selection of songs really needs an appreciation; they were simply superb. Dancers added visual treat to some of the songs.
